Why Bone Quality is a Critical Consideration for Clients with Digestive Dysfunction: Exclusive Interview with Bone Coach, Kevin Ellis

When you think of osteoporosis, you likely think of women aged 50-70 – right?

But, would you ever think of a 37 year-old male who has been on PPIs for the greater part of his adult life?

Or, a 24 year-old woman who was recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis after years of digestive dysfunction?

Or, a 30 year-old male in the Marines who suffers from celiac disease?

Believe it or not, all three examples above are risk cases for poor bone density. In fact, the Marine who suffered from celiac disease was none other than the Bone Coach, Kevin Ellis, who was subsequently diagnosed with osteoporosis at just 30 years old.

We recently had the fortune of sitting down to chat all things bone health with Kevin and learned just how important bone quality is for overall health, the many risk factors our clients face, and how we can help them support bone health, including:

-The difference between osteopenia and osteoporosis, along with the most helpful and accurate assessment technologies for bone health.

-The misconceptions and realities of exercise and bone health, and why this is something we should be thinking about in our children, not just later in life.

-Nutritional strategies for bone strength, both dietary and core supplementation considerations

-The critical importance of early bone health monitoring

-The effects of various medications on bone quality

-Exercise and resistance training for bone density

As you’ll learn in this interview, bone mass is a critical consideration for all of your clients. However, it’s often overlooked and many practitioners aren’t equipped with the level of skills and knowledge to proactively help their clients optimize bone health.

The good news is that there are tangible steps you can take to better support your clients – starting with the strategies Kevin outlines during our discussion. We encourage you to take the time to listen to the interview in full to educate yourself on what to look for and how you can better support your clients.
